    Notes:

William was in Duxbury in 1638.

William was cooper licensed to dwell within the government, at Plymouth or
elsewhere, upon the testimony of his good behavior he hath brought with him.
    Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. I. p 82.

This is the first mention of William Macomber in America. The testimony of
good behavior is likely to have been obtained from the person whom he served
hist apprenticeship in learning the trade of cooper. The date of the above
    record is April 2, 1638.

Under date of 3 September 1638, are found the following records: "William
Maycumber, a cooper, is graunted an island lying on the north side Powder
Poynt, & containing about three or four acres of land, provided that the
committees of Ducborrow doe consent thereunto, and that he doe not stop the
townes cattle from the fresh water thereupon," and "Liberty is graunted to
Will'm Maycumber, cooper, to fetch tymber to make hoopes of for vessels for the
colonies use at Clarks Island and Sagaquash." Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. I.
    p 95.

3 August 1640, "Will'm Maycumber is granted the wood fit for coopery growing
upon Wood Island, to be used by him so long as he followeth his trade, and
forbidding all others to cutt there except for the loading of boats and
vessells to carry away the hay." Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. I. p 159.

He settled in Marshfield, Massachusetts. In 1644 he was fined for speaking
against the Indians. He was a surveyor in Marshfield in 1653.

A sworn statement, made March 1, 1655, gives his age as 45 years. He was,
therefore, born in 1610. Tradition says that he was brother to John Macomber
of Taunton. In favor of this is the following:

"Aug. 20, 1644, William Maycomber of Duxborrow --------- sent forth to bring in
John Macomber for non-appearance for making allarum at Taunton." See
    Proprietors' Records at Taunton.

John Macomber is often mentioned in the history of Taunton, Massachussetts and
is called in deeds "John Macomber the cooper" to distinguish him from other
John Macombers. 23 July 1684 John Macomber of Tounton, cooper, acknowledged
that his wife Hannah, a sister of Edward Bobbit, received her part of her
father's estate by a deed of land "down Taunton River," being lot No. 1, near
    Little River.

John Macomber was a soldier in King William's War in 1691. He made his will,
"being aged", 29 July 1716. He was living 21 January 1717-18, as a deed shows.

William Macomber was a cooper by trade. 18-28 May 1665, James Cooke of
Plymouth, Massachusetts sold to William Macomber, Jr. of Marshfield,
Massachusetts, one fourth of a share of land at Dartmouth, given to him by his
    deceased father, Francis Cooke.

The lot mentioned was in the present town of Westport, Massachusetts, and
embraced what is now a part of the village of Westport Point. It was bounded
easterly by the main road and westerly by the west branch of Westport River.
This original farm of one hundred and forty or more acres has been considerably
divided, but a part of the same was (in 1908) still in the possession of the
Macomber family, being owned by Charles F. Macmober.

The Will of William Macomber, dated 10 April 1711, and probated 2 July 1711,
names his wife Mary and all his children whose births are found in the town
    records of Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

  9. 34.  John MacomberJohn Macomber Descendancy chart to this point (23.John3, 5.John2, 1.Edith1) was born 18 Mar 1681, Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts; died 14 Dec 1747, Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts; was buried Staples Street Burying Ground, Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

John Macomber was impressed as a soldier in Queen Anne's War 22 December 1701,
    and again 26 June 1711.

January 5, 1732, John Macomber of Taunton deeded to his son Nathaniel one-third
of his home farm, one corner being at the saw mill. The same day he gave to
son Josiah one-third of the same farm.

His will, dated 28 December 1742, was probated 5 April 1748. It names wife
Lydia and children Nathaniel, Josiah, John, James, Elijah, Joseph, Elizabeth
Rounsevill, Abia and Anna. His son Elijah inherited the homestead in East
    Taunton.

The burial ground, where rest the early generations of Macombers, is on Staples
Street not far from the Macomber farm.

The record of the family of John Macomber has been preserved in a branch of his
descendants now living in Augusta, Maine. It was, perhaps, copied from the
records of Taunton before they were destroyed by fire in 1848.
