Notes:
Notes given by Anna Wheeler Johnson, eldest daughter of Sarah Roberts Wheeler:
"There were 9 children in your great-grandmother, Ann Roberts family--five sons and four daughters, the latter being the youngest members of the family. I cannot tell how the boys ranged in age, only I think James was the eldest. The other brothers were William, Joseph, George and John and the sisters were Elizabeth (usually called "Bessie") Sarah (grandmother Wheeler) and Ann. The last mentioned married our own cousin, Thomas Carter, by name and died a few years later leaving a husband and two little children. I do not remember to have heard what became of her family. A memorial card was sent mother from England; you may find the same among her effects. Uncle George Roberts came from England to America at the time Mother came over; she was only eighteen then. Uncle was a barber and hair dresser and worked at his business in New York City for several years, returning when I (Anne) was about three years old. He was disappointed in love when a young man and never married, living with his mother the most of the time, dying eight days before her death. I have the dates of the deaths of the family as sent me by the Post-Master of Wakefield some years ago, but do not know just where it is; will copy and send you when I find it.
"Uncle John Roberts kept a large hotel in his native town and i think Joseph did also in Manchester England. I do not know Uncle James employment, but his brother William was a chief engineer, received a good salary and was sent by the government to superintend the business in different part of the world."
"I remember that he spent seven years at Botany Bay now Tasmania * at the time he came to New York when i was eleven years old, he had been in Rio Janeiro Brazil S.A. for nearly three years. Mother had not seen him since she left England fourteen years before."
Anne married Hiram E. Johnson 28 Jan 1858, Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont. Hiram (son of Hiram Johnson and Esther) was born 17 Dec 1834, Vernon, Windham County, Vermont. [Group Sheet]
