Records from the National Archives show John Ownby as a private in Captain Bradly's Company of North Carolina militia for six months but was not called out until February and continued in actual service for over fourteen days. He was discharged in Rutherford County, North Carolina on 6 March 1815. In 1858 John Ownby applied for a bounty land grant on the basis of his military service.
