Joab Rolen

Notes:

Joab was raised by his wifes parents.

It is said that Joab had more land than any one in the 1st district of Sevier County, Tennessee.

Joab — Anna McMahan. Anna (daughter of Archibald McMahan and Elizabeth Byrd) was born 27 Apr 1809, Buncombe County, North Carolina; died 28 Jul 1900; was buried Proffitt Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet]

1. Jane "Jennie" Rolen was born 25 Apr 1829, Tennessee; died 11 Jul 1904; was buried Huff Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
2. Archibald "Bachelor" Rolen was born 4 Jul 1832, Tennessee; died 6 Aug 1914; was buried Bachelor Rolen Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
3. James Rolen was born Abt 1835/1837, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 9 Mar 1864.
4. Elizabeth Rolen was born 10 Mar 1837, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 4 Mar 1888; was buried Proffitt Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
5. George W. Rolen was born 12 Jan 1838, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 10 Feb 1919; was buried David C. Rolen Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
6. Wilson Rolen was born 13 Apr 1839, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 27 Feb 1904; was buried Proffitt Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
7. Queenie Agatha Rolen was born 5 Nov 1841, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 15 Apr 1930; was buried Huff Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
8. Hyson Harrison Rolen was born 14 Jun 1845, Tennessee; died 1 Nov 1865; was buried Proffitt Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
9. Samuel "Sam" Rolen was born 31 Jan 1847, Tennessee; died 16 Nov 1889; was buried Proffitt Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.

Notes:

James Rolen of North Carolina married Sallie Smith in the early 1800's.
Sallie's parents moved to Alabama and she wanted to go too but James did not
want to go. So she went anyway and took their son Joab with her. When Joab was
about 5 years old, the Smith family was moving to Indiana. Sallie wrote James
that she was going with the family to Indiana and if he wanted Joab he could
come to Alabama and get him. James rode a black horse with a blaze face to
Alabama and got Joab. On their way back to North Carolina they spent the night
with a McMahan family in Sevier County, Tennessee. It rained that night and
Cosby Creek got up so people could not cross it. James left Joab with the
McMahans. James said his horse could swim any waters so he road into Cosby
Creek. He was drowned and was buried in Cosby.

The McMahan's raised Joab.

Joab's will dated 19 June 1894 was probated 3 June 1895 and recorded in Will
Book 1, pages 473-474.

James married Sally Smith Abt 1807. [Group Sheet]
