It is family tradition that Sarah had two illegitimate children fathered by John Marshall whose farm adjoined her fathers. This has not been proven.

1. Barbara "Barbary" Shields was born 1 Jul 1828, Tennessee; died 8 Jun 1914; was buried Shults Cemetery, Rocky Flats, Sevier County, Tennessee.
2. Jacob Hoover Shields was born 18 Jul 1831, Sevier County, Tennessee; died 19 Dec 1862, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky; was buried Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
