    Notes:

{A href="http://www.nando.net/smokies/clabo.au"} Herbert Clabo{/A} tells a story about John told to him by one of John Reagan's grandaughters. It seems John was sharpening his axe to split some wood when his wife Lizzie thought he had gone crazy and was about to kill her with the axe. She went up stream to get her brother to stay with them over night.

The next day they had John committed to an asylum. Days later Lizzie asked John to return to help tend the fields but he refused saying he did not want to live with a wife who commits her husband. And anyway, life in the asylum is not as tough as tending corn in the Smokies.
