    Notes:

Edward I was named for Edward the Confessor. He is known as the English
Justinian because of his fame as a lawgiver. A member of the royal family of
Anjou, or Plantagenet, he succeeded his father, Henry III, on 19 Aug 1272. He
started a war against the Welsh in 1277, and finally subdued them in 1283.
Wales then became part of the English realm.

Edward I devoted most of his reign to conquering Scotland. In 1290, of the
several men who claimed the Scottish throne, Edward chose John de Baliol. But
he insisted that Baliol pay homage to him. The Scottish people were humiliated
by this demand, and revolted. In 1296, Baliol joined the rebel forces, but
Edward forced him to surrender. Edward carried back to London the great Stone
of Scone, the coronation stone upon which Scottish kings had been crowned for
hundreds of years. Later in the year, the Scots, led by William Wallace, again
rebelled. Edward defeated them in 1298, but the Scots were not pacified.
After a long struggle, Robert Bruce was crowned King of Scotland in 1306.
Edward died on his way to subdue the new king.

Edward's Scottish policy delayed the union of the two kingdoms for 400 years.
He also did little to improve relations with France. But his need for money to
supply his army and government led him to call a parliament that would
represent the entire country. In 1295, the new parliament met. It consisted
of representatives of the nobility, the church, and the common people. This
system of representation set a model for later parliaments. Edward restricted
the power of the king by accepting the rule that taxes could be levied and laws
made only with the consent of parliament. He also sponsored laws aimed at
destroying the fuedal system, and at limiting the power of the church.

Edward I, "Longshanks" King Of England.

    Notes:

King Henry III came to the throne in 1216 when he was only nine years old, but
did not rule until he came of age in 1227. Henry was a fickle tyrant who
surrounded himself with favorites from other countries. The English nobles
revolted against his rule and the foreign influences in his court. They forced
Henry to grant the Provisions of Oxford, which transferred governing powers to
a committee of barons. Later, Henry broke the agreement and raised an army.
But he was defeated and captured at the battle of Lewes in 1264.

Simon de Montfort, leader of the reform party, then governed England until he
was killed at the battle of Evesham in 1265 by Henry's son, Edward. Edward
ruled the country during the rest of Henry's lifetime.

Henry III King Of England was married at Cantebury Cathedral, Canterbury,
Kent, England and was buried at Westminster Abbey where his altar-tomb and
that of his wife can be seen today.

    • AFN: 8XJ4-1K

    Notes:

John "Lackland" King Of England was known as one of England's worst kings. His barons forced him to grant the famous charter of liberties, Magna Carta, in 1215. He was often cruel, but he showed both administrative and military ability.

John succeeded his brother Richard the Lion-Hearted as king of England and duke of Normandy in 1199. His rule began badly. By inept politics and the murder of his nephew Arthur, he lost the allegiance of many of his French barons. King Philip Augustus of France then declared war. In 1205 John was beaten, and lost all the English holdings in France except Aquitaine.

John persued a policy in England that brought him into conflict with Pope Innocent III. In 1208 the pope placed England under an interdict, which banned church services. The following year John was excommunicated.

The king then showed his capacity for strong rule. He forced Scotland into a subordinate position, kept the Welsh princes in check, and held a firm grip on Ireland. But his foreign favorites, professional troops, and autocratic financial policy stirred up discontent among the English barons. When John failed to reconquer the lost French territories in 1214, most of the barons and many of the clergy revolted. On June 15, 1215, the king was forced to approve the Magna Carta at Runnymede meadow beside the River Thames.

A few months later, John fought the barons. They were aided by Prince Louis of France, heir to Philip Augustus, and appeared certain to win. But John penned his enemies in London and the adjacent counties. He died suddenly in 1216, but his throne was saved for his son, Henry III.

    Notes:

Louis IX King Of France or Saint Louis was the leader of two crusades. He came
to the throne when he was 12, with his mother as regent. Under her training,
he became a pious, unselfish ruler. He fought a war with Henry III of England,
who at that time ruled part of France. This war ended in 1259 when the two
kings signed the Treaty of Paris. Louis increased royal power at the expense
of the nobles, but he won their respect by being fair and just.

In 1248, Louis led a crusade to the Holy Land. He was defeated in Egypt and
taken prisoner. The Moslems released him after he agreed to pay a large
ransom. Louis led another crusade in 1270, but died in northern Africa when a
plague broke out in his army. He was considered an ideal ruler. Even his
enemies admired him for his fairness. Louis was cannonized by Pope Boniface
    VIII in 1297.
