NEWPORT-The 20th annual Veterans Day Celebration was hosted by Resthaven Memorial Gardens in the "Garden of Valor" on Sunday, Nov. 13.
Attendees turned out to pay their respect and gratitude to veterans who served in the past and those who serve today. According to the program, "They answered the call; they volunteered-they grew tired; they preserved. Some traveled far; some stayed near-some saw battle without showing fear. Their sacrifices and challenges grew greater by the day, but these loyal men and women wouldn't have it any other way. We honor and applaud them; accolades they deserve, and we stand here humbly reminded of the freedom they preserved."
Mistress of Ceremony Tina Kilgore said in her opening remarks that she was honored to be there and to give thanks and honor to veterans for their service to our country.
The service featured participation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, AM Vets, Marine Corps League, American Legion, Tennessee State Guard, Tennessee National Guard, Cocke County High School JROTC, and Jefferson County High School JROTC.
With special music provided by the Talbott Elementary Choir, led by Destiny Woods, local veterans, including Pat Henley, JC Williams, and Dale Brown, laid wreaths in the Garden of Valor to honor members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart-Chapter 547, AM Vets, Marine Corp League, American Legion, the Tennessee State Guard, and the Tennessee National Guard.
This year's guest speaker was Command Sergeant Major Gary Coker. Command Sergeant Major Coker enlisted in 1974 at the age of 17. After serving under seven Presidents in over 43 countries, he retired after being wounded on his third tour to Iraq, ending 33 years of service.
