He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ellen Knight Payne; brothers, William, Richard, Newton, Steve, Theodore, and Alva Payne; sisters, Nola Payne, Mary Ray and Ethel Payne. He is survived by his wife, Edna Lunsford Payne of Newport; son, Randall Payne of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Joyce Payne of Matthews, NC, Sandra Pevac of Littleton, Colorado, Suzanne Avis of Brownstown, Michigan; brothers, Homer L. Payne of Newport, George Payne of Chattanooga, TN; sisters, Lillie Ellison of Newport, Betty Turner of Newport and Naomi Munoz of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Briana Benson of Matthews, NC, Reed Payne and Ryan Payne of Charlotte, NC; very special friends, W.C. (Dub) and Mary Vinson, Wilbur and Margie Mathes, all of Newport ; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 8:00 pm Saturday, May 26, 2007 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Graveside services will be held 2:30 pm Sunday, May 27, 2007 in Piney Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Saturday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral services.
