Phoebe Jane Allen, 88, went home to the Lord on May 24, 2009. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., to Lena and James Robert "Bob" Owenby, she grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla., but returned each summer to vacation in Gatlinburg. As a teenager, Jane worked in one of Gatlinburg's earliest gift shops. Married to George Ludwig for 24 years, she raised two sons. After her husband's death, she married Robert Allen and retired to Sevierville, Tenn., where they were active in First Baptist Church, Sevierville. Widowed after 33 years, Jane moved to Sanford, Fla. Jane is remembered for her warm and friendly smile, her love of God, church and family, and her deep connection with the East Tennessee mountains and its people.
She is survived by her sons, George Ludwig (Kathy) of Lake Mary, Fla., and Robert Ludwig (Nancy) of Mineola, N.Y.; grandchildren, Alysia Ludwig Roach (Sam) of St. Petersburg, Fla., Peter Ludwig (Laura) of Chelsea, Ala., James Ludwig of Port Washington, N.Y., and Samuel Ludwig completing Peace Corps service in Arvaikheer, Mongolia; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Kendall Roach, Thomas and Jonathan Ludwig; and numerous Tennessee cousins.
A memorial service will be held in Sanford in July. Memorials may be sent to Westview Baptist Church, 4100 County Road 46A, Sanford, FL 32771.
