  Jon completed his education in the Haywood County North Carolina Schools. Jon served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in Austria where he worked as a radio operator. After his discharge, he attended the North Carolina Highway Patrol School at the University of North Carolina Institute of Government at Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated as a State Trooper. He was stationed in Ashe County where he met and later married Charlotte Severt. Jon was promoted to Inspector in the License and Theft Division and he and Charlotte moved to Shelby, North Carolina.
