Clarence Sylvester "Vester" McGaha, 82 of Waynesville passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at Medwest-Haywood with family standing around his bed. He was born in Cosby, TN and his family moved to Maggie for most of his life before moving to Jonathan Creek. He was the son of Nellie Brown McGaha and Martin Lonzo McGaha. He had been active in Maggie First, Dellwood, and Calvary Road Baptist Churches. He had been chairman of the Deacon Board, served on building committees, taught classes of senior ladies, young men and high school boys, sang in a quartet, and church choirs. He and his brother, Jim, cut rocks from their crusher in Cherokee to cover the front of the auditorium of Maggie First Baptist. He went into the army and was sent into battle in Korea. He came home with a determination to be a good citizen and serve the Lord. He worked at Unagusta, Dayco, Champion, ran a poultry farm and rock crusher before retiring to work on the farm.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Butch Keen and Calvin Hyson and two nephews, Sam Lewis and Martin Hannah.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Caldwell McGaha; son, Tony McGaha and his wife, Teresa of Maggie; two grandchildren, Heath of Maggie and Carrie Sutton (Ben) of Murphy; two brothers, Jim (Grace) of Maggie and Butch (Barbara) of Polk County; and five sisters, Ethel Hyson and Thelma Keen of NJ, Rev. Erma Bond (Jim), Barbara Hannah (Donnie) and Dorothy Gardner (Bill) all of Haywood County.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm Thursday, October 27, 2011 in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Erma Bond and Reverend Bobby Rogers officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 pm prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Burial will be in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Darrell Pressley, Phil James, Martin Lewis, Ed James, Bill Gardner, Charles Ray Evans, Dwight Nelson and Randy Evans will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Jonathan Valley Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Broyhill Children's Home.
