Kate Deloris (Kitty) Woods was born on June 17, 1926. She departed this life on Friday, February 5, 1999. Miss Kitty was born and raised in Newport. She graduated from Tanner School as valedictorian of her class. In 1996, she retired from Baptist Convalescent Center. She was a member of the New Zion AME Zion Methodist Church. In September 1944, she married Edward B. Woods Sr. This union was blessed with eight children. She was a devoted loving mother, grandmother, and an avid Tennessee Vol fan. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughters, Glenda F. Stewart and Janice M. Bethea; parents, Miles and Elise Davidson; brother, Elfonzo; and mother-in-law, Sarah Woods . She leaves to mourn: children, Edward B. Jr. (Newport), Mary Florence (Newport), Kevin D. (Newport), Phillip R. (Cape Coral, Florida), Wesley R. (Newport), and Catrina A. (Newport); stepdaughter, Sandra Grace (Lansing, Michigan); four daughters-in-law, Cherlaine (Newport), Karen (Newport), Darlene (Cape Coral, Florida), and Kennette (Newport); three sons-in-law, Terry Stewart (Newport), Randy Bethea (Newport), and Harold Grace (Lansing, Michigan); 22 grandchildren, Terra, Derrick, Bryan, Jamye, Chris, Stacey, Jennifer, Candice, Tasha, Darian, Phillip Jr. (P.J.), Kalenda, Wesley Jr., Whitney, Tyler, Chase, Chloe, Alexis, Solomen, Charlene, Sarah, and Kalayla; grandsons-in-law, Mark Kyle (Newport), Scotty Dykes (Knoxville), and Felix Manuel (Brunswick, Massachusetts); granddaughters-in-law, Tessa (Newport) and Tara (New Orleans, Louisiana); 10 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Louise Davidson; brother-in-law, Robert Woods (Newport); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Miss Kitty will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Manes Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Gerald Hodge, Walter Bryson, Anthony Cannon, and Charles Owenby officiating. Burial will be graveside at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gum Springs Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the funeral service.
