Burl W. Whaley , 82, a resident of Wenatchee and a former resident of Peshastin and Leavenworth, died Thursday May 6, 2004 at his home in Wenatchee.
Burl was born on April 12, 1922 to Horace McKinley and Otie (Hill) Whaley at Sevierville, Tennessee where he received his education.
In 1940, Burl moved with his family to the Peshastin area where he worked as a lumberjack and later owned and operated his own logging truck. Burl also worked for the Peshastin Lumber and Box Company as a mechanic. On August 10, 1942, he married Sylvia V. Mounter at Wenatchee and in 1944, enlisted in the United States Army and served in the southern Philippines and Luzon. After his honorable discharge he returned to the upper Valley where with his wife, owned and operated several service stations. In 1979, they moved to Manson where they owned and operated Whaley 's North Shore Inn, until 1997, when they moved to Wenatchee.
Burl enjoyed the outdoors and the time spent with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed and always loved.
He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis and her husband Bert Stegeman of Leavenworth, Ina Ruth Pearson and her husband Marvin of Plain, and Beryl Louise Smith and her husband Steve of Pittsburgh, PA. One son, Rick Whaley and friend Candy Gibson of Wenatchee. Eight grandchildren and their spouses Zonnie and Melody Whaley , Garth and Lisa Smith, Greg and Jacque Smith, Scott Hofstetter, Buck and Lily Walker, Zanee and Jeff Skinner, Carman Fretwell and Jennifer Ward.
Numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was Preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sylvia in 2001.
A Funeral Service of Commemoration to celeberate the life of Burl W. Whaley was held on Saturday May 15, 2004 at the Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth at 11:00 a.m. Interment followed at the Peshastin Cemetery. Visitation was on Friday May 14, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Memoria contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
