(August 8, 1929 - August 5, 2013) Mr. J. C. Smith, age 83, of Newport, passed away, Monday, August 4, 2013 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family, just two day before his 84th birthday. He was of the Baptist faith. J C worked at White Pine Milling Company. Once he moved to Newport he worked for Freemans Furniture then 29 years at Newport Grammar School before he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Roosevelt and Myrtle Jarnigan Smith; brothers, Harold (Beeliner) Smith, Don and Homer Smith; and sister, Mattie Reed. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Collins Smith; sons and daughter-in-law, Roger Lee Smith and Kathy Beck and Ronald Lynn Smith of Newport; brothers, and sisters-in-law, Howard( Grace) Smith, James (Pat) Smith of White Pine and Clyde (Lois) Smith of Dandridge; sister, Daisy Mae Broyles of Jefferson City. The family would like to say a “Big Thank You” to Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, who helped care for J. C. Funeral Services will be held 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Jeffrey Broyles officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, August 8, 2013 in White Pine Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Wednesday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.
