August 24, 1918 - March 26, 2014
Resided in Gatlinburg, TN
Nancy Blanche Whaley Cooper, age 95 of Gatlinburg, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at her home.
She was the last surviving child of Steve and Pearl Whaley, who built the Riverside Hotel in the 1920s. The Whaley family operated the Riverside Hotel for decades. Mrs. Cooper took her own turn as general manager during War World II, when her twin brother, Bruce J. Whaley, left his role at the hotel to serve in the U.S. military overseas.
After the war, Mrs. Cooper and her late husband, Fred J. Cooper, built and operated Cooper Court, directly across Gatlinburg's Parkway from the Riverside. The Coopers also owned and operated a Pan Am service station for a time.
Mrs. Cooper was an excellent cook, specializing in many of the "mountain" dishes she grew up with at the Riverside. She published a cookbook, Gatlinburg Recipe Collection, in 1986.
She was an inveterate card player, joining with long-time friends for decades of afternoon bridge games.
Mrs. Cooper was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred J. Cooper, granddaughter Kimberly Gates, sisters Beulah Whaley Clabo and Mary Evelyn "Bo" Whaley Trotter, brothers, Dick, Ray, her twin brother, Bruce Whaley, and nephew Bob Whaley
