Smith, 41, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, from the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and the son of Martha Hall Smith and the late Douglas Smith. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Paris and Lola Hall and Lena Smith. Doug enjoyed playing guitar, hiking, and whitewater rafting. He was an active member of Grace Free Will Baptist Church where he taught a Sunday School class. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife Kim Smith; sons Douglas Smith III of the home; and Eric Phimphrachanvongsoth of Johnson City; brothers Conley Smith of Johnson City; Richard Smith and wife Rebecca of Bluff City; Tommy Smith of Johnson City; and Danny Reed and family of Hampton; sister-in-law Danielle Spurling and husband John of Kingsport; nieces and nephews Taylor, Noah, and Caleb Spurling; and Mary Ann Smith; aunt and uncles and many special friends including Scott Elrod, Ken Bradley, Steve Moffit, and Merle Papy. A Celebration of Life for Doug will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Grace Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Curtis Hurt and Associate Pastor Jackie Cole officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. prior to the service. A committal service will take place Monday, April 26, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hall Cemetery in Newport, TN. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Conley Smith, Richard Smith, Tommy Smith, Danny Reed, Douglas Smith III, John Spurling, and Eric Phimphrachanvongsoth.
