LANCASTER — Joyce Cottongim , 70, died amongst her children and eldest grandson on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Hospice Compassionate Care Center following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 20, 1942, in Cincinnati, she was a daughter of John William and Lucille Cottongim . She was reared in Evarts and lived most of her adult life in Richmond.
She was a selfless and loving Christian, and attended Buena Vista Baptist Church in northern Garrard County.
She was a lifelong teacher and advocate, retiring from Madison County Schools with over 45 years of service. She dedicated her life to educating and serving children and families.
She taught home-bound, gifted and talented, Title I reading and was a migrant advocate. She wrote grants for Madison County Schools and was awarded more than $1 million for the Migrant and Even Start programs. She was a graduate of Evarts High School and Eastern Kentucky University, earning her Bachelor's and Rank I in education.
Survivors include one son, Roger Brett (Jessica) Short of Lexington; one daughter, Kristi Short of Lancaster; four beloved grandchildren, Trevor and Luke Short of Lancaster, and Caroline and Cate Short of Lexington; one brother, John (Connie) Cottongim of Sevierville, Tenn.; one sister, Cheryl (Van) King of Versailles; a dear friend and a former husband, Wayne Napier of Cartersville.
Joyce was predeceased by a former husband, Roger Short.
A memorial service for Joyce Cottongim will be held at 4 p.m. today at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. today until the time of service at the funeral home.
