- [S24] The Newport Plain Talk, (http://www.newportplaintalk.com), 13 Feb 2006.
Ralph Columbus Kyker passed away suddenly on February 13, 2006. He had been in declining health for several years. Ralph was the fifth child of William C. and Anna Mae Kyker. He was educated in Cocke County. At the age of fifteen, he left Newport and enlisted in the US Army. After serving his country he was discharged on June 22, 1947. At this time he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio in search of employment. It was during this time Ralph learned his trade of plumbing. After several years of work and training he returned to Newport and began his own business, Kyker Plumbing. He operated his successful business until severe health problems forced him into an early retirement. Ralph was a man of many talents. Besides being a master plumber and running his business; he also simultaneously ran a successful beef cattle operation for several years. Another interest he pursued was the buying and selling of real-estate. He also loved to collect antiques. For him the time spent cleaning, repairing and researching their origin was a labor of love. Ralph was an excellent story teller. He delighted in talking about the past escapades he had participated in. he loved animals and was always rescuing something and providing it with a sanctuary. Ralph was a very charismatic and thoughtful person. He possessed the most beautiful, warm, kind, and loving spirit. He was loved by those who knew him. Ralph had a genuine love for people. If he could be remembered for but one thing, it would be his generosity. He loved to help people. He was generous to all who knew him. He truly lived to help people and always put them first before himself. An old philosopher once said, "What a shame to grow old without having lived." Ralph lived with all the agony and ecstasy life had to offer. A few days ago he took flight into the bosom of God and the heavens rejoiced. Ralph was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Williams C. and Anna M. Cureton Kyker; brothers, William C. Kyker, Jr., Bob H. Kyker, Jack L. Kyker and Jim Carroll Kyker; half-brother, Lawrence Kyker; sister, Mable Lombardi. Survivors include, sisters, Anna L. Kyker and John Ramsey, Wilma and Clay Drinnon of Newport, Jane and Patrick Johnston of Riduios, New Mexico; half-brother, Edward Kyker; also several nieces and nephews. He will be sadly and forever missed by his niece, Kaye Ramsey and all of his very close and special friends. Ralph was cremated per his request and he did not want there to be any kind of services for him. Manes Funeral Home in charge.
