Gladys C. Cowart, age 92 of Pigeon Forge, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. She was born November 3, 1920, in Smokemont, NC, which is now a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge, and was part-owner of the Smoky Shadows Motel and Convention Center. Mrs. Cowart's father was the well-known Charles W. Conner, for whom Charlie's Bunion on the Appalachian Trail was named by his friend Horace Kephart. She married Thomas Cardell Cowart in December, 1941, in Pigeon Forge. During World War II, she worked at ALCOA, while her husband was in Alaska, surveying for the U.S. government. Mrs. Cowart also worked for the Fairfax County Hospital in Virginia for several years in the 1960's. She found pleasure in serving her community and church in many ways, including as a Sunday School teacher and Senior Fellowship Director, board member of the Southern Baptist Convention, member of the Pigeon Forge Garden Club, and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She worked tirelessly as an advocate for Sevier County Senior Adults. As a result of her community service, she received the J. Pritchard Barnes Public Service Award, given by the Pigeon Forge Rotary Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas Cardell (T. C. "Buck") Cowart, Sr.; parents, Charles W. and Ella Beck Conner; sisters, Lucille Moles, Ruth Sheffer, and Wanda Barnes; and brothers, Charles and Douglas Conner.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas C. Cowart, Jr. and wife Alesia, and Randal V. Cowart and wife Bonnie Thie; granddaughter, Kerala Cowart and husband Andy Eberle, and honorary granddaughter Chelsea Barnes; and sister, Jeanette Gamble.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Mountain Brook Village, who cared for her well for many years.
Funeral service 10 AM Wednesday at Atchley's Smoky Mountain Chapel, Pigeon Forge with Dr. W.W. Cope and Dr. Dale Ellenburg officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Tuesday at Atchley's Smoky Mountain Chapel, 220 Emert Street, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
