Libbye McMahan, mother of Cocke County mayor, dies at 86
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Funeral services will be held tonight in Manes Funeral Home Chapel for Libbye McMahan, mother of Cocke County Mayor Iliff R. McMahan, Jr.
Mrs. McMahan passed away Sunday at Newport Health and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. She was 86.
She was born in Loudon County, TN, the second of four children of Cocke County natives Turner James Norris and his wife, the former Jessie May Cureton. Christened Sallye Elizabeth in honor of her grandmothers, she quickly became known as "Libbye."
Following her graduation from high school during World War II, she joined hundreds of other East Tennesseans at "The Secret City" of Oak Ridge working on The Manhattan Project.
She was married to the late Iliff R. McMahan. Early in their marriage the McMahans resided in Newport where she became a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Prior to her death, she was the last surviving charter member of the group.
The McMahans were the parents of one child, Iliff R. McMahan, Jr., who now serves as Cocke County Mayor.
In the 1950s, the family moved to Nashville and later to McLean, VA. During these years, the couple retained their strong ties to family and friends in Cocke County and returned often for visits and special occasions.
Following Mr. McMahan's retirement, the couple returned to Newport and purchased the Goucheour home on Cliffwood Drive and immersed themselves in many local activities.
They were active members of First Baptist Church where she attended services as long as her health permitted.
She became passionately interested in genealogy and devoted countless hours to researching her family's history. Many of her ancestors, including the Cureton, Eisenhower, and Norris families, were among Cocke County's earliest settlers. As a descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Maximillian Conner, she became a member of William Cocke Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law Marcie Wilds-McMahan, she is survived by a brother Bill Norris and a sister Patricia Norris Harrison. Another brother, A. C. Norris, preceded her in death.
Dr. Rich Lloyd, Rev. Rick Clevenger, and Rev. Dan Hickson will officiate at tonight's services which will begin at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow in Union Cemetery.
Manes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
