Walter Shelton, 86, the battle he fought bravely with cancer ended in victory on Saturday (September 3, 2011) at his home in Church Hill.
He was born in Cocke County and resided in Kingsport, TN for the past 35 years. Mr. Shelton was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during World War II in the Philippines and the Northern Mariana Islands of Sipan, Tinian and Guam with the 20th Air Force B-29 bomb wing. He retired after 32 years with East Tennessee Natural Gas. Walter was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church and attended McFerrin United Methodist Church serving along side his wife in ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James William Shelton and Florence Ford Shelton, brother, Doyle Shelton, sister, Dorothy Dawson, brothers -in-law, Brady Raines, Earl Clarke, Joe Edwards, and Sidney Gregg Dawson.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rev. Regina Haynes Shelton; son Walter Anthony Shelton and fiancé Nicole Piaskowski of Knoxville; future granddaughter, Milania Antonella Shelton; sisters Ruby Raines of White Pine and Birdia Clarke Edwards of Elmer, New Jersey; brothers, Clifton Shelton and wife Louise; Herman Shelton and wife Margaret, both of Newport; Vaughn Shelton and wife Alice of Parrottsville; sisters-in-law Ostia Shelton of Central City, Iowa; Dr. Charlene Haynes of Lake Wales, Florida; brother-in-law, Jack Haynes, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Scottsboro, Alabama; mother-in-law Iva Haynes of Marion, VA; 20 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
