Public School Record from 1873
Official records pertaining to Cocke County schools prior to the 1920s are rare, so when a small book was found in the papers of Jefferson Denton revealed school records from 1873, local historians were ecstatic.
Denton (1810-1887) and his wife, the former Charity Huff (1815-1892), and their family lived in the Bogard community on today’s Yellow Springs Road at the base of English Mountain.
He was very prominent in local affairs, serving as a Justice of the Peace, Captain of the Home Guard during the Civil War, an election official, and in numerous other capacities.
The following information taken from the Public School Record book will be of interest to many local families.
