LONG, MRS. ALICE RAY — age 84, of Newport, went to be with the Lord, Friday afternoon after suffering a lengthy illness. Mrs. Long, the daughter of local and prominent business man, Ben H. Ray, co-owner of Driskall and Ray Furniture, was born in Newport, TN, June 7, 1919. Thru the years Mrs. Long was a devoted member in the First Baptist Church of Newport, Newport Rotary Club, Clifton Club, Newport Garden Club and the Newport Business Women's Club. The last 12 years she resided in Maryville, TN, where she continued the memberships in several organizations. Mrs. Long was a very avid gardener and seasoned traveler.
Mrs. Long is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Ben H. Ray and Mrs. Ona Trotter Ray; stepmother, Nellie Gray Ray; brother, J. T. Ray, sister, Mrs. Loretta Hicks Ross and husband Dennis M. Long III.
Survivors include, son, Dennis M. Long IV and wife Penny Long of Newport; son Ben Ray Long and wife Phyllis Long of Maryville; grandchildren, Rick Long of Mohawk, Alice Long of Newport, Matthew Long of Maryville; great grandchildren, Caitlin Ramsey and Cameron Ramsey of Newport, Logan Long of Baneberry; special nieces, Sally Ross Dill of Knoxville, Sue Marshall of Alabama; also several nieces, nephews and many close friends; care giver, Judy Messer of Newport.
Funeral services will be held 5:00 p.m. Sunday in Manes Funeral Home West Chapel, with Dr. Rich Lloyd officiating. Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Manes Funeral Home West building prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers will be, L. D. Ottinger, Ronnie Ottinger, Matthew Long, Rick Long, Bill Shults and Jim Overholt. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Newport, 262 E. Broadway, Newport, TN 37821. Manes Funeral Home in charge.
