John Martin Painter, born March 13, 1924 passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice in Halls on September 20, 2009. John was married for 58 years to Helen Cole Painter who died June 24, 2009. He was a twice-decorated veteran of World War II, having been awarded medals for going above and beyond the call of duty while on the front lines in Rhineland, Germany. He retired from White Stores as a butcher after thirty-six years. John will be missed by his family and friends and remembered as being a steady person and a hard-worker. He and Helen faithfully attended Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by parents Ethel and Geoffrey Painter, a brother Jim Painter, sisters Pauline Whitson, Juanita Nutter, Hazel Painter, Mary Lou Painter, and Jeanette Lane.
Survivors
He is survived by a daughter, Terri Lynn Howard, and her husband Gene and their son John Howard of Knoxville; and a sister Elizabeth Fine and husband Jack of Powell , and sister in-law Jean Painter of Knoxville, and a host of nieces and nephews that he loved very much. Also left behind are long-time friends Sam D. Snyder, Mark and Allison Snyder Turner, Bob Mize and Teresa Gobel and her grandson Connor who John loved like a grandson, all of Knoxville.
Special thanks to the staff of The Heartland Village of Elmcroft of Halls, Assisted Living Center and also to St. Mary’s Residential Hospice staff.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Service
The family will receive friends Thursday from 10am to 12pm at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel. Family and friends will meet Thursday in the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at 1:15pm for a 1:30pm interment service with Dr. Sean White officiating and full veterans honors.
