Oscar Henry Ervin, age 89 of 630 Creek Road, Reliance, passed away 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at his home. Member of Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was the oldest deacon and served as choir director for 60 years. Son of the late Patrick and Mary Green Ervin. Born December 11, 1914 at Bullet Creek, Tennessee where he raised his family and was a farmer and logger on the family farm.
Survivors: wife of 70 years, Zula Hamby Ervin; eight children and spouses -- Beuna and Bobby Smith, Merrillville, IN, McKinnley and Faye Ervin, Maryville, Jean and Robert Price, Reliance, Alma Thompson, Madisonville, David and Betty Ervin, Maryville, Jerald and Peggy Ervin, Niota, Jerry and Willene Ervin, Reliance, Linda Dodson, Athens; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren' 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by sister, Annie Ervin Norwood; brothers, Homer and Abner Ervin; son-in-law, Rev. Robert Thompson.
Funeral 2:00 p.m. Friday, Union Grove Baptist Church, Pastor Kenneth Watson officiating. Interment in Maple Springs Baptist Cemetery. His children will serve as pallbearers. Body will lie-in-state at the church one hour before service. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Tellico Plains.
