Obituaries referred to citizens with Civil War memories
For many years following the Civil war, obituaries of local
citizens often referred to their Civil war experiences and
memories. such is the case of the following article, which
appeared in The Newport Plain Talk on august 28, 1931.
Death Comes To Mrs. Algia Ragan
Mrs. Algia Ragan, beloved Newport lady, passed away at
2:45 this morning at the home of Mrs. Jetta Lee, on East Main
street, with whom she had made her home for a number of
years. Mrs. Ragan was past 82 years of age, having been born
on May 22, 1849. ‘Aunt Algia,’ as everyone knew her, was
the widow of the late Alexander Ragan, who preceded her to
the grave 25 years ago. She was the daughter of Alexander
and Elizabeth Padgett McNabb.
Mrs. Ragan came up through the period of Cocke county’s
history when the nation was crushed by civil warfare. Her
school days were therefore interrupted, but she was always a
constant reader and had a store of information at her disposal
on all the subjects of interest both to the old and young. She
always enjoyed reading history and the works of literature
also claimed a great deal of her attention. Mrs. Ragan was
personally known by many people in Cocke county and it was
always a pleasure for them to visit the Lee home and converse
with her. She took a great delight in entertaining her visitors,
and everyone always felt better after sitting in her presence
for a short while and hearing her converse softly of matters of
the present and past.
Funeral services are to be held Sunday afternoon at two
o’clock at the Brown Funeral Home. The interment will fol-
low in Union cemetery.
