Myrtle A. Pickel, age 80 of Sevierville, died Friday, August 19, 2005
The family of Myrtle A. Pickel would like to express their deepest gratitude for the gift of her life. After 80 years in Sevier County, she will be remembered as a uniquely intelligent and loving member of our community, and will be sorely missed. A native Sevier Countian, she led an active life, first as a student at a small mountain school near the Greenbrier area, and later in her first job as an engraver at the old Emery's Five and Dime in downtown Sevierville during the years of WWII. It would be no exaggeration to state that during these years she was regarded as being one of the most beautiful women in the county. With her trim figure, striking, elegant features, dark hair, and refined personality, she was often compared with Vivian Leigh. Following the war, she married and assumed the role of homemaker and mother to her two children, Brenda and Stephen. During the 1970's, she became a regionally noted collector of antique glassware as the proprietress of her antique shop, Matilda's Antiques. In later years she served the community as an outreach worker, locating and qualifying underprivileged residents of the county for home weatherization. She also served as primary care-giver to her ailing mother. Following her retirement, she lived quietly but remained in contact with her friends and relatives, always willing to lend her gift for communication and caring to anyone in need. She also possessed a keen wit and wry sense of humor which never diminished. There are no words to express the depth of our love and affection for her, or to describe the irreplaceable role that she held in the lives of those she loved. Her soft voice, incandescent smile, and loving words shall remain with us even as we give her to Heaven. We love you Mother, so very, very much.
She is greatly missed by her two children, Brenda Wilson and Stephen Pickel
Grandchildren, Selina Moore and Tracy Burnette
Great Grandchildren, Jarret Moore, Payton and Madison Burnette
