GATLINBURG - Gene Shambaugh, who has served as director of the murder mystery dinner theater benefiting the Anna Porter Public Library for three years, died unexpectedly Friday after an apparent heart attack the day of the premiere of the latest theater production.
"Everyone said he was a amazing person - let me put it that way," said Shambaugh's wife, Frances. "I will remember him for his vitality and humor. He survived cancer and two different operations and all sorts of things with a positive attitude."
Those involved with the play, which went on as scheduled Friday and will be performed again tonight, say Shambaugh was rehearsing with them Thursday evening and was in great spirits.
"He was on top of the world. He was as happy as can be," said cast member Megan Ownby. "The cast was contacted to see if we wanted to continue to do the play. One of the cast members talked to Gene's wife and she said 'Absolutely, that's what I want you to do.' The play is now sold completely out. It will be a full house because I know everyone loves and respects Gene Shambaugh so much. Working with him has been nothing but incredible."
Shambaugh, a Rossville, Ga., native, was a retired manufacturers representative who moved to Sevier County in 1981. He was in charge of the entertainment for "Homecoming '86" events for the city of Gatlinburg, and also did the same for Riverfest there for three years.
Five years ago Shambaugh, 72, started selling real estate for Greenbrier Valley Resorts in Gatlinburg, where he worked until his death.
Shambaugh was also serving on the Bicentennial Committee for Gatlinburg's upcoming celebration this summer.
"He did a lot," Frances Shambaugh said. "I was chairman and I couldn't have done that without him. He planned to do a living history Civil War reenactment, in conjunction with the 4th of July celebration."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
