Cocke County has one less hero this week following the death of Herman Victor Hall, who died at his English Creek home on Sunday, August 5. He was 93. Hall, who retired from the US Navy, was a Pearl Harbor survivor. His death leaves only three other men in the county who were at that Hawaii military base at the time of Japan's surprise attack on the morning of December 7, 1941. O. C. "Hoppy" Hopkins, Orville Calfee, and Solomon Black survive. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, Hall was already a seasoned military man, having enlisted in the Navy on July 10, 1934. Hall's decision to enter military service came during the depths of the Great Depression. A military career offered both a financial opportunity not available in rural Cocke County and a chance to see the world. Hall served his country throughout World War II and remained in service until his honorable discharge in August, 1954. Born in Cocke County's English Creek community on July 1, 1914, Hall was the son of the late Lucius Simpson Hall and his wife, the former Mary Etta Gray. His forebears included at least two Revolutionary War soldiers - James Gray, Sr. and Bartlett Sisk, Sr. - who settled in Cocke County in 1805 on bounty land they received for their military service. The family's homeplace stood on some of this property. Hall's decision to serve his country continued his family's legacy of patriotism. In a 1990s interview with Cocke County High School students Freddy James, Jr., Rodney Erby, and Angela Miller, Hall said that at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, he was serving as a chief boatswain's mate. Early in the morning of December 7, 1941, Hall was piloting a small craft beside the USS Arizona when it was bombed. With his fellow servicemen, Hall helped extinguish fires and rescue injured soldiers. In a 2003 interview with Plain Talk's co-publisher David Popiel, Hall said that his 80-foot vessel's chore was to go to all the ships and pick up garbage. "We had already made about four pickups and were headed towards Battle Ship Row," Hall told Popiel. Hall's first realization that an attack was underway came when he spotted about eight torpedoes traveling through the clear harbor water just below the surface. Because his ship's depth in the water was small, compared to that of the West Virginia and other nearby battleships, the torpedoes passed under his ship and then struck the West Virginia. Hall escaped serious injury when Japanese guns strafed his ship. "I was standing on the deck when the concussion of an explosion on another ship knocked me into a hopper," he said. His ship had several large hoppers where garbage was tossed. A friend pulled him out. After leaving Pearl Harbor, Hall was sent to the Heverdies Islands for 18 months and then was a seaplane tender, working with planes which bombed at tree-top level. His last post during the war was in the Philippines, where he was in the battle of Langan Gulf. While he was in the military, Hall returned to Cocke County on a 30-day leave to marry his sweetheart, the former Ila Mae Bryant. After the war, upon his arrival in Cocke County, Hall telephoned her from Juanita Templin Gay's store and she met him there. The couple later spent a week in Gatlinburg at Maple Cabins. After his retirement from the military, Hall and his family returned to Cocke County where they built a brick home on Lower English Creek. He farmed and later went to work for Rhyne Lumber Company, spending about 20 years with that firm operating their concrete mixing plant before retiring again. In later years, Hall regularly attended Pearl Harbor memorial services in Knoxville, along with other survivors of that famed attack. He was a member of English Creek Baptist Church. Hall's wife died several years ago. Surviving Hall are the couple's three children, Neil, Judy, and Gordon, and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends tonight at Brown Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m., led by Rev. Stephen Smith. Burial will be Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Union Cemetery.
